USAID Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC)
A CUSTOM ONLINE REPOSITORY AND CLEARINGHOUSE
USAID needed a way to quickly search for and access program reports and lessons learned to assist analysis and administrators in better evaluating current and future projects. LAC staff designed
and launched USAID’s DEC using InMagic Presto. Combing IT systems managers, taxonomists and knowledge managers, the LAC team developed the system architecture with customized thesauri
to enhance discovery and retrieval. We digitized over 300,000 legacy paper/microfiche records and
used SAS tools to automate metadata extraction and PII redaction for new deposits (1,000+ per month). LAC staff were awarded the Meritorious Honor Group Award and received special thanks from the USAID Administrator.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Data Commons
AN INTER-AGENCY AND INTERDISCIPLINARY OPEN DATA REPOSITORY
As part of a project for a large inter-agency team including the USDA, DOE, DOT, EPA and others, LAC staff developed metadata harmonization and transformation tools to enable standardized data submissions from federal, private sector and academic research partners. Staff structured data tables, data libraries and crosswalks to allow researchers to directly upload data into a repository. These tools transform and cleanse submission data, simplifying the processing of vast amounts of complex data. LAC staff provided a creative and innovative workflow that enabled multiple federal and state agencies, academic research partners and commercial partners to seamlessly contribute and collaborate. Through the LCA Data Commons, the environmental impact of production can be analyzed for macro and micro trends both geographically and diachronically.
NASA Goddard Linked Data Initiative
IMPROVING INTEROPERABILITY AND SEARCHABITLY OF AGENCY RECORDS
At the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), individual offices and units used different names to refer to the same mission (up to six per mission), hampering interoperability and searching of records. LAC’s Metadata Team developed and launched an initiative to systematize and link the data across systems. While retaining the historic unit-provided nomenclature, staff provided cross linkages in each disparate repository. Customers of the GSFC can now find all relevant materials for a given mission through a single search. The discovery portal can identify all mission records and suggest additional, faceted search terms to allow users broader or narrower-related term selection.
