USAID Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC)

A CUSTOM ONLINE REPOSITORY AND CLEARINGHOUSE

USAID needed a way to search for and access reports and lessons learned to assist analysts and administrators in evaluating future projects. LAC staff designed and launched the DEC using InMagic Presto. Combining IT managers, taxonomists, and knowledge managers, LAC developed
the system architecture and thesauri. We digitized over 300,000 paper/microfiche records and used SAS tools to automate metadata extraction and PII redaction for new deposits. LAC staff were awarded the Meritorious Honor Group Award and special thanks from the USAID Administrator.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Data Commons

AN INTER-AGENCY AND INTERDISCIPLINARY OPEN DATA REPOSITORY

As part of a project for a large inter-agency team including the USDA, DOE, DOT, EPA, LAC staff developed metadata harmonization and transformation tools to enable standardized data submissions from federal, private sector, and academic research partners. Team structured data
tables, data libraries, and crosswalks to transform and cleanse submission data, simplifying the processing of vast amounts of complex data. LAC staff provided an innovative workflow that enabled public sector and commercial partners to collaborate seamlessly.

MedlinePlus and MedlinePlus en español

IMPROVING CONTENT DISCOVERABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY

For both the English and Spanish-language MedlinePlus websites, LAC web content specialists created and optimized content using a combination of search engine optimization (SEO) techniques. This included the creation of a custom taxonomy that mapped technical terminology to more commonly searched keywords to raise the search results of the site in both languages. Bilingual consumer health specialists created plain language content using this taxonomy leading to both sides ranking regularly being among the top returned results for many subjects. Staff also provided 508 remediation for all content using automated and manual testing for all content.
